Biometric monitoring, redefined

Vital-sign awareness from the wall, with nothing worn and nothing watched

"Biometric monitoring" usually means a device on the body: a watch, a chest strap, a pendant with an accelerometer. In senior living, that assumption fails for the people who need monitoring most. Devices are forgotten, refused, removed in the shower and left uncharged, and cognitive decline makes every one of those failures more likely.

mmWave radar changes the assumption. Because it measures the tiny movements of a body at a distance, the rise and fall of breathing, the mechanical pulse of a heartbeat, the sway of a person standing, it can observe physiological motion from a fixture on the wall, with no contact and no camera.

What radar can observe

  • Breathing patterns, including whether someone in bed is breathing normally, quickly or not at all.
  • Heart-rate patterns, resolved from the micro-motion of the chest.
  • Movement and gait: walking speed, cadence, transfers from bed or chair, unsteadiness and turns.
  • Presence and posture: standing, sitting, lying down, and the rapid descent consistent with a fall.

All of this is resolved from radio-frequency reflections. There is no image and nothing a person could recognise.

What ALLIE does with it

ALLIE uses these signals for presence, activity and distress detection. A resident who has been still for too long, whose breathing looks abnormal or who has fallen and not got up triggers an alert with the room, the context and the severity. Over weeks, movement and gait trends give care teams early warning of rising fall risk so they can act before an incident rather than after one.

ALLIE is not a medical device and does not diagnose conditions. It is an ambient awareness layer that helps the people responsible for a building notice sooner and respond faster.

Why "redefined" is the right word

The traditional trade-off in monitoring has been between coverage and dignity. Wearables offered dignity at the cost of coverage, because they were so often not worn. Cameras offered coverage at the cost of dignity, and were rejected for it. Fixture-native radar removes the trade-off: every room is covered, all the time, and no one is asked to wear or accept anything.

Privacy is part of the design, not a setting

Signals are processed on the device. Events, not streams, leave the room. Access is role-based, retention is configurable and there is no recording to review. Families and residents can be told exactly what the building senses and exactly what it keeps, and the answer is one they can live with.

That is what biometric monitoring should have meant all along: the building quietly knowing that the people inside it are all right, and speaking up the moment one of them is not.

How Should AI "See" in the Real World?

As AI moves into bedrooms, bathrooms, and everyday living spaces, how it “sees” matters. We break down the tradeoffs of cameras and Wi-Fi sensing, and why mmWave radar is emerging as the privacy-first foundation for real-world awareness.

Advancing the energy transition at the edge

Arqaios moves energy management to the edge by embedding control in outlets, switches, and vents. We cut vampire loads, turn off lights in empty rooms, tune room-level HVAC, and extend battery backup with predictive automation across homes, senior living, hospitality, and offices.
